We live in a world crying out for the joys and lessons of camp.

About Us

Meet the Directors

Welcome from Camp Director Celia Wood

As Camp Director, I want to introduce myself and welcome you to see what our camp and camp community have to offer. After graduating from Millsaps College and earning a master’s in English from North Carolina State University, I taught for some twenty-five years at St. Andrew’s Episcopal School in Jackson, Mississippi, and various community colleges. Along the way, I had the good fortune to develop and help lead several camps for the Junior League of Jackson. In doing so, I rediscovered the magic of camp, which stimulates incredible inner growth. If there is anything I am passionate about, it is helping young people achieve their full potential. I love camp because on the surface it is all about having fun, while deep down it is all about growing up.

In 2002, Camp Windhover opened its doors and my dream of running a summer camp came true. My husband, Frank, designed the buildings, while I designed the programs. In keeping with our focus on the whole child, we decided to offer not only lots of traditional camp activities like archery, canoeing, and horseback, but also unique opportunities in the arts, such as theater, ceramics, and rock-and-roll guitar and drums.

Frank has now retired from law practice and serves as our camp manager. He is kind of a jack-of-all-trades, having graduated from Ole Miss, earned an MBA from UNC-Chapel Hill, and a law degree from U. Va., before practicing law in Jackson for twenty-five years. Frank’s special interest in writing and drama is evinced by his winning productions of two plays in the Eudora Welty New Plays Series at New Stage Theater in Jackson. Working with young people is our common passion.

Each year, creating camp is a different and creative experience. Our child-oriented staff are carefully selected, and many counselors are former campers and CITS.  We appreciate the trust our campers, their families, and our staff place in us, and we invite you to join our camp family.
